What this tool does

The PDF compressor reduces file size by redrawing the images inside your PDF at a lower resolution, saving them as JPEG images, and tidying the file structure. Text, fonts and vector graphics are not changed, so text stays sharp, selectable and searchable. Choose a PDF, pick a level (High Quality keeps images sharp, Medium is a good balance, and Maximum gives the smallest file with lower image quality), then download the result. Compression runs entirely in your browser; your file is never sent to any server. Useful for getting under email attachment limits, speeding up web uploads, and reducing storage.

FAQ

Common questions about
compressing PDFs

Everything you need to know about reducing PDF file size online.

It depends on what is inside the PDF. In our tests, a PDF with photos became more than 90 percent smaller at every level, a scanned PDF became about 50 to 90 percent smaller depending on the level, and a text-only PDF became only a little smaller (about 22 percent). These are typical examples, not guarantees: results vary by file.
Only for images. The tool lowers the resolution and JPEG quality of the images inside your PDF: High Quality keeps images sharp, Medium is a good balance, and Maximum gives the smallest file with lower image quality. Text, fonts and vector graphics are not changed, so text stays sharp, selectable and searchable at every level.
With RapidTools, yes, because everything happens locally in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to our servers or to any third-party service, which matters for contracts, financial records or medical files.
Photos and scanned pages. A scanner saves every page as a picture, and camera photos are often several megabytes each. Embedded fonts add a little, and plain text adds very little. That is why PDFs with photos or scans shrink the most.
No. Remove the password first, using the original password, and then compress the PDF. The tool shows a message if you choose a password-protected file.
Yes. Scanned PDFs are made of page images, so they shrink well. In our tests, a scanned PDF became about 54 percent smaller on High Quality, 78 percent smaller on Medium and 92 percent smaller on Maximum, and the text stayed readable. These are typical examples, not guarantees.
Usually a few seconds. In our tests, a 15.6 MB PDF with photos took under 3 seconds on Medium. Files with many large images take longer, because each image is recompressed on your own device. There is no upload or download wait, because nothing is sent to a server.
Not yet. The tool compresses one PDF at a time, so you can choose the best level for each file.
