Yes. RapidTools converts each page to an image with your redaction marks burned in before rebuilding the PDF. There is no text layer remaining in the output file — the content cannot be extracted, copied, or recovered by any means.

Converting pages to images is what makes the redaction real. If the text layer remained in the file, a black box on top of it would be cosmetic — the text could still be extracted. Rasterizing the page destroys the text structure entirely. The tradeoff is that the output PDF will not have selectable or searchable text.

It depends entirely on how the redaction was done. If someone used a drawing or annotation tool to place a black rectangle over text, the original text is still in the file — it can be selected, copied, or revealed by deleting the annotation. This is not real redaction and has caused high-profile data leaks in court filings and government documents. If proper redaction software was used (Adobe Acrobat’s Redact tool, or RapidTools), the underlying text is permanently destroyed and cannot be recovered.

Open the PDF and try to select text behind the black area. If text highlights or can be copy-pasted, the redaction is fake — it was done with a drawing tool, not a real redaction tool. You can also press Ctrl+A to select all text in the document, then paste into a text editor. Hidden text behind fake redaction boxes will appear. If no text is selectable at all (as with RapidTools output), the page has been flattened to an image and the content is permanently gone.

The result is similar — both destroy the text. But a physical Sharpie has disadvantages: marker ink can sometimes be read through with image processing, scanning introduces quality loss and artifacts, and you need access to a printer and scanner.
