Missing Documents

How to get copies of
missing tax documents

Lost a W-2 or 1099? It happens. Here is exactly how to get replacements for every common tax form before merging and filing.

Form
How to get a copy
Backup option
W-2
Contact your employer's HR or payroll department. They are required by law to provide a replacement. Request by January 31 of the following year; replacements after that may take 2–3 weeks.
IRS Wage and Income Transcript — shows all W-2 income reported to the IRS. Available free at irs.gov/get-transcript (online instantly or by mail in 10 days).
1099-NEC / 1099-MISC
Contact the business or client who paid you. They are required to provide a copy. If they used a payroll platform (Gusto, ADP), check your employee/contractor portal.
IRS Wage and Income Transcript includes all 1099s reported to the IRS — covers most clients who filed properly.
1099-INT / 1099-DIV
Log in to your bank or brokerage and download from the Tax Documents section. Most banks keep these available for 7 years. Charles Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, and most major banks offer PDF downloads.
IRS Wage and Income Transcript also shows 1099-INT and 1099-DIV if reported by the payer.
1099-R
Contact your retirement plan administrator (pension fund, 401k provider, IRA custodian). Fidelity, Vanguard, TIAA, and others provide PDF downloads from your account portal.
IRS Wage and Income Transcript includes 1099-R distributions reported by your plan.
Prior Year 1040
If you filed with tax software, log back in and download. If you filed on paper, order an IRS Tax Return Transcript (the full return) at irs.gov/get-transcript.
Tax Account Transcript (shorter version showing key line items) is also available free from the IRS — useful if you just need AGI for verification.
Schedule K-1
Contact the partnership, S-corporation, estate, or trust that issued it. The issuing entity is required to provide K-1s by March 15 (or September 15 with extension). Keep after-the-fact K-1s; they do not appear on IRS transcripts.
No IRS backup available — K-1s are not reported to the IRS independently. You must get them from the issuer directly.

IRS Get Transcript is available at irs.gov/get-transcript. Online access gives you instant PDFs; mail delivery takes 5–10 days. Schedule K-1 due dates come from the IRS Instructions for Form 1065, and the October 15 extension deadline from IRS: Get an extension to file your tax return. Last reviewed: October 2026.

FAQ

Common questions about
merging tax documents

Everything you need to know before combining your tax files.

Add your tax PDFs (W-2s, 1099s, tax returns, receipts) using the tool on this page. Drag to reorder them, then click Merge Tax Documents. Your combined PDF downloads instantly — no account or software needed.
With RapidTools, yes — because your files never leave your browser. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. No tax document is ever sent to our servers, making it safe for W-2s, 1099s, Social Security numbers, and bank account details.
Absolutely. Merging your tax documents into one organized PDF is the best way to send everything to your CPA or tax preparer. It saves them time, reduces back-and-forth, and ensures nothing gets missed. Include a cover page listing each document for best results.
You can merge any PDF tax documents including W-2 forms, 1099-NEC, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R, 1099-MISC, 1099-K, prior year tax returns (1040, 1040-SR), Schedule C, Schedule D, K-1 forms, mortgage interest statements (1098), charitable donation receipts, medical expense receipts, business expense records, and IRS correspondence.
The IRS accepts PDF uploads for amended returns (1040-X) through their online portal, and tax software like TurboTax and H&R Block accept merged PDF evidence uploads. For physical mail submissions, you would include separate documents. Your accountant or tax preparer will typically accept merged PDFs for review.
The recommended order is: (1) Cover sheet or document list, (2) Prior year tax return for reference, (3) W-2 forms from all employers, (4) 1099 forms (NEC, INT, DIV, R, K), (5) Other income documents, (6) Deduction receipts and records, (7) IRS correspondence, (8) Supporting schedules. Ask your accountant if they have a preferred order.
With an extension you get until October 15 to file (taxes owed were still due April 15). Your merged package should include all W-2s and 1099s, your prior year return, estimated tax payment confirmations (Form 1040-ES), and whatever caused the delay — commonly a late K-1 from a partnership or S-corp. Include that K-1 front-and-center so your accountant can proceed immediately.
Yes. Merge federal return first (with all schedules), then state return, then any state-specific forms. If you file in multiple states, create one merged package per state to keep things organized. Many accountants are fine with a single combined PDF for review.
Open the PDF in your browser or PDF viewer, enter the password, then save it as a new PDF without the password (Chrome: File → Print → Save as PDF; macOS: Preview → Export as PDF). You can then merge the unlocked version here. Most brokerage PDFs use owner-level restrictions rather than passwords and typically merge without any extra steps.
