What this tool does
This tool removes the open password from a PDF when you know it. Choose the PDF and type its password. The tool opens the file with that password and saves a copy that opens without one. It never guesses or cracks passwords — if you do not know the password, it cannot help. Everything runs in your browser, so your file and your password are never sent to any server.
⚠️ Only use this on PDFs you own or have permission to change.

🔑 Password (the password you type to open this PDF)
Type it exactly — passwords are case-sensitive. The tool tries only the password you type.
🔒 Your PDF and your password are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is ever sent to any server.
How It Works
Remove a PDF password in 3 steps
The PDF is opened and saved again with pdf-lib, running in your browser. Your PDF and your password never travel to any server.
Choose your PDF: drag it onto the upload area or click to browse. The tool checks whether the file needs a password to open.
Type its password: the same password you type to open the file in a PDF reader.
Download the unlocked copy: click Remove Password & Download PDF. The copy is named after your file with “-unlocked” added, and it opens without a password.
🔑 What changes: only the password and its encryption are removed. Pages, text, and images are copied as they are. Because the copy is no longer encrypted, any printing or copying restrictions that came with the password are removed too.
When is this useful?
Many banks, payroll services, and tax portals send PDFs locked with a password you already know, such as part of your account number or your date of birth. Typing it every time you open the file gets tiring. Removing it makes sense when:
You keep your own records: bank statements, payslips, utility bills, and tax documents stored in a folder that is already safe.
You need to combine or edit the file: other tools, including RapidTools Merge PDF, Compress PDF, and Sign PDF, cannot open a locked PDF. Remove the password first, then use them.
You are uploading to a portal that rejects locked files: some job sites, government portals, and accounting systems cannot read password-protected PDFs.
What this tool will not do
It will not guess a password. It tries only the password you type, once. It never retries on its own or tries common passwords.
It cannot help with a forgotten password. Ask the person or organization that sent the file for a new copy.
It does not remove printing or copying restrictions on their own. If a PDF opens without a password, there is nothing to remove, and the file is left unchanged.
⚠️ Keep the unlocked copy safe: anyone who gets it can open it. To send it by email, add a password again with Password Protect PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this remove a password I do not know?
No. You must type the correct password. The tool tries only the password you type — it never guesses, retries, or tries common passwords. If you have forgotten the password, ask the person or organization that sent the file for a new copy.
Is my PDF or my password sent to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and saved again entirely in your browser. Your file and your password never leave your device, and RapidTools never sees either one.
What happens if my PDF only has printing or copying restrictions?
Nothing is removed. A PDF that opens without a password does not need unlocking, so the tool shows a message and leaves the file unchanged. It does not remove printing, copying, or editing restrictions.
Does removing the password change the content of the PDF?
No. Pages, text, and images are copied as they are. Only the password and its encryption are removed, so the copy opens in any PDF reader without a password.
Is it safe to keep a PDF without a password?
Only where the file itself is safe. Anyone who gets an unlocked copy can open it, so keep it in a secure folder, and add a password again with Password Protect PDF before you email it.
