How to Rotate a PDF — Permanently, Any Page, Any Device
How to rotate a PDF permanently — this guide explains the difference between a real fix and a view-only rotation, then walks you through the free methods on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android without Adobe Acrobat.
Quick answer: Go to rapidtools.online/rotate-pdf, upload your PDF, choose 90° Clockwise, 180° Flip, or 90° Counter, then click Download Rotated PDF. Every page is turned and the rotation is saved into the file, so it stays fixed when the file is reopened or sent. Free, no watermark, no upload.
This is why rotating a PDF in a viewer often does not stick: many apps offer a “rotate view” that only changes how that app shows the file on your screen. The file itself is unchanged, so it is sideways again when you reopen it or send it to someone.
View rotation (temporary): used by the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and most browser PDF viewers. It lasts until you close the file.
File rotation (permanent): saves the new direction into each page of the PDF. Everyone who opens the file sees it the right way up.
💡 Test it: rotate the PDF, close it, and open it again. If it is sideways again, you only got a view rotation.
1
Free Browser Tool — Any Device
The fastest way to permanently rotate a PDF on Mac, Windows, Chromebook, iPhone, and Android. No install, no account, and your file never leaves your device.
Drag it onto the upload area or click to choose it. It is processed in your browser, never on a server.
3
Choose the direction
90° Clockwise, 180° Flip (for upside-down pages), or 90° Counter (counter-clockwise). A sideways page usually needs 90° one way or the other.
4
Click Download Rotated PDF
The tool turns every page by the same amount and downloads the new file, named with rotated- in front. Open it to check.
ℹ️ All pages at once: the tool rotates every page in the file. If only one page is sideways, use the steps in the next section.
How to Rotate Just One Page
The most common case: a 10-page document where only page 3 is sideways. There are two free ways to fix just that page:
On a Mac: open the PDF in Preview, click only page 3 in the Thumbnails sidebar, press Cmd+R (or Cmd+L), and save. Only that page changes.
On any device with RapidTools: use Split PDF three times to make three files — pages 1-2, page 3, and pages 4-10. Rotate the page 3 file with Rotate PDF. Then put the three files back together in order with Merge PDF, using the up and down arrows to set the order.
💡 For alternate landscape and portrait pages, Mac Preview is easiest: Cmd-click each page that needs turning, rotate them together, and save.
2
Mac — Preview (Built In)
Preview can permanently rotate PDF pages. The step people miss: you must save after rotating, or the change is lost.
1
Open the PDF in Preview
Double-click the file, or right-click → Open With → Preview.
2
Select the pages
Show the sidebar with View → Thumbnails. Press Cmd+A for all pages, or click only the pages you want.
3
Rotate
Choose Tools → Rotate Left or Rotate Right, or press Cmd+L / Cmd+R.
4
Save
Press Cmd+S. This writes the rotation into the file.
Method 3 — Windows
Windows has no built-in tool that is sure to save a rotation into the file. Your options:
Browser tool (permanent, free): open rapidtools.online/rotate-pdf in Chrome or Edge, choose the direction, and download.
Microsoft Edge PDF viewer: Edge has a Rotate button, but it changes the view. Check by closing and reopening the file — if it is sideways again, the rotation was not saved.
Adobe Acrobat (paid subscription): use the Organize Pages tool to rotate pages, then save. In the free Acrobat Reader, Rotate View only changes the view.
From Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Downloads.
3
Tap a direction, then Download Rotated PDF
On iPhone the file goes to Downloads in the Files app. On Android it goes to Downloads. It opens the right way in Mail, WhatsApp, Google Drive, and any other app.

Go to rapidtools.online/rotate-pdf, upload your PDF, choose 90° Clockwise, 180° Flip, or 90° Counter, and click Download Rotated PDF. The rotation is saved into the file, so it does not reset when the file is reopened or sent.
Many viewers only rotate the view, not the file. Close and reopen the file, or send it to someone, and it is sideways again. A permanent fix saves the rotation into the PDF — use RapidTools, or Mac Preview and then save.
RapidTools rotates every page at once. To fix one page, split that page into its own file, rotate it, and merge the parts back in order. On a Mac, select only that page in Preview, rotate it, and save.
No. Rotation changes the direction each page is shown in. Text and images are not re-compressed, so they stay exactly as sharp as before.
Open the PDF in Preview, select the pages in the Thumbnails sidebar, choose Tools → Rotate Left or Rotate Right, and press Cmd+S to save. Or use rapidtools.online/rotate-pdf in Safari.
